What to look for:

Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most petrol engines the cam belt must be changed within 5 years or 80,000 miles and 40,000 miles with most diesels.

What it means:

If the cam belt and tensioner kit are not changed on time, the belt will fail and seriously damage the engine.

What to do

Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £200. It will cost £700 - £1,000 to have the engine repaired if the belt fails.

What to look for:

Look for blue/black smoke from the exhaust when the engine is warm (have someone stand at the back of the car while it is revved). Also look for loss of power/sluggishness during test drive or a whistling or ‘graunching’ sound from the top of the engine whilst it is running. Open the bonnet and listen to the top of the engine to spot this.

What it means:

The turbo is blown. The blue smoke is burning oil from the blown turbo seal falling onto the front of the exhaust and igniting. It can cost up to £1200/£1500 at main dealers and £850 at a specialist. Make sure the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve is replaced at the same time. This part can often be the cause of turbo problems on these engines.

What to do

If the car is under warranty (3 years/60,000 miles) then Ford may replace the defective part for free. Otherwise try to negotiate a discount of £1000.00 off of the price of the car.
