What it means:

If the cam belt and associated parts (such as balance shaft belt) have not been changed, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Fortunately, it is unlikely to do any other damage to the engine.

What to do

Negotiate a £235 discount or the belts changed.

Here's an example fault on the HONDA Accord (2003 - 2008)

What to look for:

1) Check all available paperwork for receipts showing the car has had oil top-ups or changes. Contact the garage that has serviced the car to see if it has had any oil problems. 2) Locate the dip stick on the engine. Pull out, wipe clean, dip and read. The oil should be golden not black and near the full marker. 3) Start the engine from cold and listen for a metallic clattering noise.

What it means:

These diesels engines can use oil quickly. If the car is allowed to run low on oil, the clattering noise is an early warning sign of potential engine problems. Turbo problems can also result from oil starvation. Listen for a whine from the turbo when accelerating.

What to do

Have the car inspected.
