What to look for:

1) Leave the engine on and listen for the engine misfiring (rather than the revs being constant when on idle and the engine making a consistent noise, it splutters and spits). 2) Put the car into 5th gear when travelling at 30 m.p.h. and see if it starts to splutter or runs smoothly.

What it means:

These symptoms point to an EGR valve problem. The valves need cleaning. Honda will fix this problem under warranty.

What to do

Negotiate a £200 discount or have the repair completed under warranty if within its time limit.

We know of 16 HONDA Jazz (2008-) faults which our fault check guide makes it easy for you to spot and avoid.

  • 1 engine faults
  • 6 suspension wear items or faults
  • 3 interior problems
  • 1 bodywork issues
  • 5 recalls

Here's an example fault on the HONDA Jazz (2008-)

What to look for:

Sit in the car and, with the ignition on, press the small button by the speedometer marked trip. You will see the letter A, press it again and you will see the letter B. Press this switch the third time and you will see the service indicator. This will tell you how many days till the next service and what kind of service it is. The car should be serviced annually so it counts down from 365 days. So, for example, if you see 28 days you know it’s only a month away from needing a service. If you see the letter A next to the number then it’s an A service, B means a B service. If you see both then it’s a bigger service. These bigger services have a numerical code after them – they are more expensive than the standard servicing.

What it means:

If a service is close then you will have to budget for it. If you see the letter A next to the number then it’s an A service (£65), B means a B service (£100). If you see both then it’s a bigger service. These bigger services have a numerical code after them – they are more expensive than the standard servicing (£200+).

What to do

If the car needs a service then try to reduce the price of the vehicle by the relevant amount.
