What to look for:

Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On pre-2000 engines the cam belt must be changed within 8 years or 80,000 miles. On post 2000 engines, the cam belt needs to be changed after 90,000 miles or 10 years. There is usually a sticker under the bonnet confirming this.

What it means:

If the cam belt and associated parts (such as water pump and tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure.

What to do

Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £140.

Rev the engine in neutral and listen/feel for any excessive vibration from the engine. With the car in neutral and the handbrake on, rest your foot against the clutch – check for excessive vibration or ‘pulsing’ in this area.

What it means:

This could be caused by a problem with the flywheel. This is of the ‘dual mass’ and can be a very expensive repair.

What to do

If the car is under warranty (three years/60,000 miles) then Volvo may repair the car for free. Otherwise Negotiate a £1000 discount or have the repair completed.
